    The pervasiveness of powerful mobile computers in the form of smartphones and tablets that are constantly on and nearly constantly with us and imbued with a rich array of sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and location-sensing that allow for new types of off-the-desktop interaction;
    The "hardware renaissance" in Silicon Valley (and other places) that is fostering a renewed culture of hardware-oriented products and ideas such as the FitBit,, the Lytro, the Pebble Smartwatch, Nest, Microsoft's Kinect, the Nike Fuelband, and low cost flying drones such as the AR.Drone.

    Introduction to Physical Computing at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU taught by Professor Tom Igoe . Tom and ITP colleagues have just shifted their materials to online videos (link) and a new website (link)--both are awesome and the video tutorials are some of the best I've ever seen (there's over 70 of them).

    You can download this local OpenNI 2.2 backup (which I downloaded last year), use the now stale but still available git repo, or try a managed fork. I also found this website, which provides detailed instructions on setting up OpenNI and NiTE using archived zips; however, I can not vouch for this website and caution you to download and install software from unknown sources/websites.
    With OpenNI installed, you can also install and use the SimpleOpenNI framework for Processing. Because I installed all of this software last year (Spring 2014), I have this working on my Mac if you'd like to see it.
